The Rich History and Bright Future of Atlantic City’s Taj Mahal

If you’re one to plan ahead, we’ve got your vacation for next summer covered. Get ready to book a trip early because Hard Rock Hotels has recently revealed plans to invest $500 million into a complete revamp of Trump’s Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. Our new and improved casino resort will integrate the rich Atlantic City history into the classic Hard Rock vibe by summer 2018.

Known for its casinos, famed boardwalk, and beach, Atlantic City was first put on the map by developers all the way back in the 1800s. After resorts were built and the popularity of the city increased, tourists from all over the country flocked to the booming city to visit large and extravagant hotels. The city continued to attract celebrities and nightlife until World War II, when the city’s popularity declined for a bit.

In order to revitalize the city, New Jersey approved casino gambling for Atlantic City in the ‘70s. Immediately following this historical decision, tons of new resorts and casinos alike were constructed along the famous Boardwalk. After about a decade of transformation, Atlantic City became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire country. Since then, Atlantic City has continued to thrive as a casino resort town known as the Las Vegas of the East coast.

Updating a Classic

The plan is to emphasize the glitz and glamour of the history that has taken place in this Atlantic City destination, while making it even better for the future. Celebrities like Michael Jackson and Merv Griffin once walked the halls of this casino and hotel, which was first opened in 1990, making the star power strong from the beginning and leaving behind a history that cements that era.

But when the project is complete, the current look and feel of what was once the Taj Majal will be but a memory. It’s the start of a new era. Hard Rock CEO, Jim Allen, said, “There will not be one — and underscore the word ‘one’ — piece of design, architecture, minaret or anything left over from the Taj Mahal. We are removing it all.”

By mixing the classic Hard Rock vibe with a unique New Jersey feel, the new casino and resort will draw on the largest collection of music memorabilia in the world. And, with a stay at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, the staff will deliver a Fender electric guitar to your room, so you’ll feel like one of the great rock stars that have walked other Hard Rock halls.

It’s about creating an experience that embodies the classic Hard Rock vibe we all know and love with a unique New Jersey spin. And what’s more “New Jersey” than Bruce Springsteen? Steven Van Zandt, who plays guitar in Springsteen’s E Street Band, as well as starred on the Sopranos television show as mobster, Silvio Dante, will be broadcasting his radio show, “Little Steven’s Underground Garage,” from the casino from time to time.

Van Zandt will also take part in the unbeatable Hard Rock beach concerts. According to Van Zandt, “The spirit of rock ’n’ roll is still alive” and the new Hard Rock location is the perfect place to experience it. This will become the new hotspot of Atlantic City, “a timeless place where you can come, and for the younger generations that feel like they missed the rock ‘n’ roll era when it first came along, we make sure that they get the experience,” said the guitarist.

The new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City will feature two casino arenas with a total of 7,000 seats, as well as 2,400 slot machines. It will make Atlantic City stronger than ever and per Allen, “We look forward to being a catalyst for further growth and development of the area.”

While the city has seen better days as resort casinos spread to different locations, like New York City, Hard Rock’s investment is great news for the city and will attract travelers from across the globe. Make sure to mark your calendars, because the grand opening of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City in summer 2018 is sure to be one for the books.
